Brown University - Office of International Programs

Rome - Art, Architecture and History

Spend this summer discovering ancient Roman Art, Architecture and History in just under 5 weeks. Crispin Corrado, Brown Ph.D., has offered this program for a decade, with ongoing success and positive participant feedback. She will be joined by Max Goldman, Brown Ph.D and member of the Classics Department at Vanderbilt, to offer the 2012 course. Instruction is largely based around site visits and exposure to ancient Roman landmarks.  These visits will be complemented by lectures, which offer context and background.  Students from multiple disciplines, such as art history, archaeology, classics, history, and international relations, will find this course relevant to their study.   While living in Rome’s vibrant present, students will explore the Imperial past.  Following four weeks in Rome, students will visit key landmarks during a four day excursion in the Bay of Naples area, where they can view first hand sites that chronicle events of the Roman Empire such as Pompeii and Herculaneum.  Join us in Rome.

Course Details

ARCH 0540: Rome: Art, Archeology and Civic Life from the End of the Republic though the Early Empire (ca. 40 BC-AD 140)

Students complete this program with an in-depth knowledge of imperial Roman history, gained through hands-on exploration of the ancient remains. Following a four-week immersion in the city of Rome and its historical sites, students spend a week in the Bay of Naples area. Based in Sorrento for the week, the program explores Pompeii, Herculaneum, the Naples Archaeological Museum and other sites which chronicle the events of the Roman Empire. Traveling by bus and foot throughout the city each day, you will feel at home in the city that is your classroom.

Housing & Meals

In Rome, students live in a dormitory that is centrally located.  Students will receive meal tickets as part of the program so that they can experience the many dining options in Rome. Students should plan to spend some of their own money on meals outside of their meal ticket options. During the final week of the program, students will live in a shared room at a hotel in Sorrento. Breakfast and dinner are included while in Sorrento.

We cannot arrange for housing prior to or after the program dates.
