Study Abroad and Health
Cultural Adjustment and Stress
Studying abroad is an excellent opportunity for academic and personal growth. Living in a foreign environment can be exhilarating and, at the same time, stressful. Adjusting to a new culture and/or communicating in a foreign language requires flexibility and the ability to try and fail without much concern. While studying abroad, mild physical or psychological disorders which may be under control at home can become serious under the additional stresses of adjusting to a new culture.
Foreign Medical Practices
The manner in which medical help is obtained, the way patients are treated, the conditions of overseas medical facilities, and how health care are afforded often markedly different from US practice. Students need to be prepared for the reality that US health-care values, assumptions, and methods are not universally practiced. Indeed notions regarding the onset of illness or points at which expert attention is required are to some degree cultural phenomena. Students need to be advised about any foreign country requirements on health issues that might exclude them. (From: NAFSA's Guide to Education Abroad for Advisers and Administrators).
Special Vaccinations
It is your responsibility to verify whether special inoculations are required by checking with a local travel clinic. You may also consult the Centers for Disease Control for information concerning recommendations for inoculations.

Recommendations
If you have a physical or psychological condition which requires treatment or monitoring by a health care provider, you should consult with your physician or therapist about the prospect of studying abroad. For example, if you are on medication, discuss with your physician the type of care you may need while abroad and the best way to continue your regimen. Psychiatric care and certain medications are not widely available in many parts of the world. Seriously evaluate the potential impact of stress from cultural and language adjustment. In addition, be aware of the availability and possible limitations of medical care in the new environment. If you do decide to study abroad, please inform the OIP and your site personnel of ongoing medical needs, so that you can be supported in the best way while abroad.
