| Study Abroad Credit Transfer Process
The Mandatory Post-Approval Process
Brown Programs
If you attended a Brown-sponsored program, all graduation credit will transfer automatically, but you will need to get courses approved for which you wish to earn concentration credit.
In order to obtain concentration credit, you must download and complete the following form. Please read the instructions carefully.
Transcripts from the Brown exchange program are sent directly to the OIP. The OIP will notify you when your transcript is available for pick up.
Exception: Students attending programs in Germany must bring their Scheine to the OIP.
Approved Alternative Programs
Once you have returned from your study abroad semester, you will need to verify with the Registrar's Office (University Hall, Room 312) that your program provider/host institution has sent them a copy of your transcript.
Transcripts from your program must be sent to:
Study Abroad Coordinator
Registrars Office
Box K
Providence, RI 02912
You will then need to obtain a copy of your study abroad transcript from the Registrar's Office.

Brown Policies on Study Abroad Courses
1. You must register for a full load of courses at the foreign institution. For Brown Programs, courseload requirements are outlined in the online application. For Alternative Programs, please consult the Approved Alternative Courseload Requirements (PDF).
2. In order to receive four Brown credits, you'll need to pass each course with the equivalent of a C- or better.
3. You cannot take courses abroad S/NC (i.e. Pass/Fail). Your formal transcript must show a grade for each course. You will not receive credit for any courses taken S/NC.
4. If you are studying in a country or on a program with a Brown language requirement, you must take all of your coursework in the local language.
5. If you are taking courses in English in a country where the host language is not English, you must take one course in the local language (i.e. a Danish language course on the Brown in Denmark Program).
6. If you are on an Alternative Program that allows you to take regular university courses at local institutions, at least half of your courses must be taken at the local institutions in the local language.
7. You must save all records from abroad to present to faculty or the OIP if necessary. Keep all syllabi, exams, papers, notes, projects, and bring them back with you to Brown.
Enrollment Changes on Site
If you make changes in your course enrollment while abroad, especially in the courses you plan to take for concentration credit, you should email your concentration advisor with information about the new course to ensure that you will receive the necessary credit for it when you return.
Graduation Credit from Study Abroad
Due to the difference in credit-counting systems, the number of credits you take in your program abroad may not be equal to the number of credits you will receive for your work at Brown.
- In a semester credit/hour hour credit system, one Brown credit is equal to four semester hour credits. To receive four Brown credits, you must take a total of 15-16 semester hour credits.
- In a quarter hour system credit system, one Brown credit is equal to six quarter hour credits. To receive four Brown credits, you must take a total of 24 quarter hour credits.
- In systems that do not use a comparable credit hour method, you must demonstrate that you took the full-time course load at the host institution to receive a full load of credit at Brown.
If you take more than a full load abroad, you will still receive only four credits per semester on your Brown transcript as mandated under the Brown Guidelines for Foreign Study.
You will not receive letter grades on your Brown transcript. Graduate or professional schools may wish to see your grades from abroad, in which case you must request an official transcript from the foreign institution to include with your application.
Tuition Credit from Study Abroad
In order to earn a Brown degree, students must accumulate eight semesters of tuition credit, signifying the completion of eight semesters of full-time study.
A minimum of three course credits per semester from study abroad will grant a student one semester of tuition credit. A minimum of seven course credits per year will grant a student two semesters of tuition credit.
Students who fall below these numbers and hence do not earn the anticipated amount of tuition credit from study abroad should consult with an Academic Dean to determine how this shortage will affect their graduation date. (For further information, see Tuition Regulations).
