| While You Were Gone
You may have missed some events and changes at Brown while you were gone, but DON'T PANIC! The OIP will fill you in on some of the most important...
Oodles and Oodles...
- Brown hosted the Strait Talk Symposium, a student initiated conference to address the U.S.-China Taiwan relationship. Speakers at the weeklong conference included James Lilley, former U.S. ambassador to China and Richard Bush, director of the American Institute in Taiwan under both Clinton and Bush. The highlight of the event was an Interactive Conflict Resolution dialogue over the whole week between five Brown students, five Taiwanese students, and five students from the People's Republic of China.
- Stellar fall for Brown athletics: Men's soccer won the Ivy title with a 5-1-1 conference record. They advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament before losing to #1 seeded University of Maryland. Football won the Ivy title with a 6-1 record in the conference, and 9-1 overall record. The last time the Bears advanced to the NCAA tournament was in 1996, but this is the first time that Brown won the bid outright.
- Brown was featured on the O'Reilly Factor when Jesse Watters, a producer of the show, crashed SexPowerGod and videotaped scantily-clad Brown students dancing in Sayles Hall.
- Brown offered temporary admission to students displaced from colleges and universities by Hurricane Katrina, in addition to inviting professors whose home institutions were affected to spend the semester at Brown as visiting faculty.
- Professor of Mathematics Thomas Banchoff and Professor of Classics Kurt Raaflaub were each named Royce Fellows Teacher of Excellence in October. The Royce Fellows program rewards faculty for introducing thoughtful and innovative techniques into the classroom; established by Charles Royce '61, the Royce Teaching Fellowship provides a $20,000 supplement to the professor's income and access to another $20,000 which may be used to develop teaching aids and support scholarly activities.
