Senator Whitehouse Tours Sideny E. Frank Research Facilities

Dr. John Donoghue, Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, Dean Edward J. Wing

On September 18, 2009 Senator Sheldon Whitehouse came to campus for a tour of a couple of Brown’s research facilities in the Sidney E. Frank Life Sciences Building. The visit began with a tour of the MRI facility led by Dean Wing and Dr. John Donoghue, where the Senator was informed about the research being conducted with AIDS patients. From there the tour continued on to Dr. Tricia Serio’s lab, where she thanked the Senator for the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) funding Brown has received.

After the tour of the labs Dean Wing spoke with the Senator about research at Brown and the progress of the Medical Education building. Vice President for Research, Clyde Briant, spoke next about university research in general, the total funding we have received from ARRA ($20 Million to date), and some of the partnerships we have formed – IBM, Draper and RI-CIE.

Finally, three climate change researchers – Jack Mustard, Annie Schmitt and Tim Herbert – spoke about their work and the pending climate change bill. The Senator mentioned a hearing he is planning for later this fall on the Oceans and his interest in possibly having a witness from Brown.
