News from the Corporation 2004

Dear Members of the Brown Community,

I wanted to let you know about exciting news that was announced today in conjunction with the October meeting of the Corporation.

As you may know, the Faculty and the Board of Fellows approved the establishment of a new Institute for Archaeology and the Ancient World in order to build on Brown's long-standing excellence in the field of ancient studies. Artemis A.W. Joukowsky '55, LLD '85, P'06, chancellor emeritus of the University, and Martha Sharp Joukowsky '58, LHD '85, P'06, professor emerita of Old World archaeology and art, have made a leadership gift that will establish and endow the institute and support the development of its program and the recruitment of additional faculty. An additional gift will also help support the renovation and expansion of Rhode Island Hall as a permanent home for the Institute.

Rhode Island Hall was identified during the strategic planning process as a facility that should be more fully utilized as academic space given its size and prominent location on the Green. The next steps will include further planning studies, additional development efforts to raise the funds needed to renovate the building, and a plan to identify space on campus for the relocation of those currently in Rhode Island Hall.

We are very grateful to Arte and Martha Joukowsky for their unparalleled support, generosity and love for Brown, which they have expressed in countless ways over the past two decades. I know you will join me in expressing deep and sincere gratitude to the entire Joukowsky family, true stewards of Brown.

Sincerely,

Ruth J. Simmons
