Community Policing Program
In an effort to support the department’s mission to strengthen community partnerships, each member of the department is responsible to build and improve community relations, and seek new and improved ways to provide services to members of the community.
The Community Policing Program within the Patrol Bureau serves as a program that provides the resources and guidance for officers to best interface with the University community as they work towards effective problem-solving and crime prevention.
Shift officers, to include Campus Police and Security Officers, have been assigned “beats”, which include various academic, administrative, and residential buildings. The purpose of these assignments is to promote increased interaction between the officers and the community members that live and work in these areas. Thus, community members have a personalized, resource officer that they can expect to be available to respond to their safety needs. Beat officers will be responsible for organizing Beat Meetings to inform groups of criminal activity and safety information relevant to specific geographical most affected by such activity.
Officers assigned to First Shift, (7:00a.m.-3:00p.m.), will be responsible for establishing liaisons and communication with various members of academic and administrative departments within the community.
Officers assigned to Second Shift, (3:00p.m.-11:00p.m.), will be responsible for establishing liaisons and communication with various members of the residential community.
Officers assigned to Third Shift, (11:00p.m.-7:00a.m.), will target areas in which there is activity during the late hours of the day. Such areas will include campus eateries, libraries, and study areas.
Cooking with Cops Program
A popular program with the students! This interactive community policing program is offered in coordination with community directors and residence peer leaders. Officers and students engage in pizza making sessions, enjoy BBQ's, and pasta dinners in the residence hall while discussing safety issues.
