Crime Alert – Assault 

February 12, 2014 

The Brown University Department of Public Safety would like to notify the Community of an assault that occurred at the intersection of Angell and Brown Streets.  

Incident
On 2/12/14, at approximately 9:30 P.M., a member of the Brown University community was assaulted by five unknown males.  The unidentified males fled the scene on foot towards downtown Providence. The victim described his assailants as wearing dark clothing and approximately 20 years of age.

The incident is under investigation by the Providence Police Department and the Brown University Department of Public Safety

COMMUNITY ALERT- PHONE EXTORTION SCAM
January 23, 2014

The Brown University Department of Public Safety would like to notify the community of a phone extortion scam.

The University is warning community members of a phone scam in which the suspect attempts to extort money from victims. Providence Police and Brown University Police are currently investigating two recent incidents where the suspect calls the victims and informs them that a family member has been involved in a car accident with the suspect. The suspect goes on to say that the family member is in need of medical attention and will be held without medical care unless the victim sends money via wire transfer to cover expenses. The suspect caller also warns the victims not to call police or their family member will be harmed.

Several similar incidents have been reported to Universities in the region over the past four months. No victims have been injured during any of these attempts and the suspects have not been successful in getting victims to send money.

Crime Alert – Robbery

 January 8, 2014

The Brown University Department of Public Safety would like to notify the Community of a robbery that occurred on Cushing Street.

 Incident

On 1/08/14, at approximately 6:30 P.M., a Brown University student while walking on Cushing Street was approached by two unknown males who demanded his belongings. The student complied and was not injured. The unidentified males fled the scene on foot towards Hope Street. The victim was unable to provide police with a description of the suspects.  

The incident is under investigation by the Providence Police Department and the Brown University Department of Public Safety

Crime Alert – Attempted Robbery

December 18, 2013

The Brown University Department of Public Safety would like to notify the Community of an attempted robbery that occurred at the intersection of Brown Street and Lloyd Avenue.

Incident

On December 18, 2013, around 9 AM, a community member while walking near the intersection of Brown and Lloyd was approached from behind by two male suspects. One of the suspects displayed a handgun and demanded his personal belongings. The suspects then fled the area last observed running north on Brown Street.  

Suspect 1: a male, mid-teens, approximately 5’7”, wearing an orange hooded style sweatshirt with a winter style ski mask.

Suspect 2: a male, mid-teens, approximately 5’7”, wearing a tan hooded style sweatshirt, with a winter style ski mask.

The incident is under investigation by the Providence Police Department and the Brown University Department of Public Safety

Crime Advisory – Robbery and Arrest

December 2, 2013

The Brown University Department of Public Safety would like to notify the community of a robbery and apprehension of the suspect, occurring on December 2, 2013, at approximately 4:35 pm.

 INCIDENT

On Monday, December 2, 2013, at approximately 4:35 pm, a Brown University student was walking on Manning Walkway when he was approached from behind and robbed of his cell phone.  A description of the suspect was broadcasted.  A short time later, the suspect was apprehended by Brown University Police.

SAFETY INFORMATION:

As a reminder, many crimes of opportunity occur by suspects taking advantage of individuals distracted by talking on their cell phone.  DPS encourages all members of the community to continue to be vigilant and proactive in maximizing their personal safety – talking or texting on your phone or listening to music with earphones will make you less aware of your surroundings.  Please report any suspicious behavior by person(s) or vehicles(s) to DPS at 401-863-4111.
