Biochemistry and Molecular Biology

This concentration is designed to provide an understanding of basic principles and concepts of modern biochemistry and molecular biology as well as a background for medical school or graduate studies in biochemistry, molecular biology or other medical sciences.

Standard program for the Sc.B. degree

Twenty semester courses in biology, chemistry, mathematics, and physics, including the following core requirements:

3 courses in mathematics, statistics and/or computer science (typically including MA 9, 10)

2 courses in physics (typically PH 3, 4)

3 courses in physical and organic chemistry (beginning with CH 33; or equivalent credit)

1 course in biophysical chemistry (CH 40)

3 courses in biochemistry (BI 28 and 127, plus CH 123 or 124)

6 electives taken from the following: BI 20, 47, 50, 53, 105, 106, 109, 110, 126, 129, 131, 154, 156, 220, 221; BN 102, 167; CH 50, 114, 121, 123, 124, 145

2 semester courses of independent research approved by a concentration advisor (BI 195,196 or CH 97,98)

(Note that the mathematics and physics requirements may be satisfied by Advanced Placement credit.)
