Concentration in Hispanic Literature and Culture

There are three tracks in the Hispanic Literature and Culture Concentration:

Prerequisite for all three:

SP 50 or placement.

Hispanic Literature and Culture

1. Either SP 74 or both SP 73 and SP 75.

2. Either SP 60 or SP 170.

3. Three 100-level courses in Peninsular literature, at least one of which should be pre-twentieth century.

4. Three 100-level courses in Spanish American literature, at least one of which should be pre-twentieth century.

5. A Capstone course, SP 190, which may be used in place of one of the above 100 level requirements.

With the approval of the concentration advisor, up to two 100-level courses may be replaced by courses in another Romance literature, in comparative literature, or another appropriate field.

Up to four courses from study abroad can be applied towards concentration requirements, provided that they have been approved by the concentration advisor.

Interdisciplinary Peninsular literature and culture.

1. Either SP 74 or both SP 73 and SP 75.

2. Either SP 60 or SP 170.

3. Six 100-level courses in Peninsular literature/culture, three of which must be departmental courses. The other three may be in related fields, at Brown or abroad.

4. A Capstone course, SP 190, which may be used in place of one of the above 100 level requirements.

Concentration in Language and Linguistics

Prerequisite:

SP 74; or two of the following SP 50, 73, 75.

1. Two courses from the following group: SP 60, SP 170, CO 171.

2. One foreign language course from the following: PB 11, PB 40 or higher; or Catalan.

3. Two literature courses: one 100-level course in Peninsular Spanish literature and one 100-level course in Latin American literature.

4. One introductory Cognitive Science and Linguistic Science course from the following: CG 8, CG 32/AN 82, CG 41; CG 45. Please note: since CG 41 serves as a prerequisite for many upper level courses in CG, we recommend that students take CG 41.

5. Two additional courses: One 100-level CG course approved by the concentration advisor; and one from the following: AN 180, PL 85, PB 150, PB 160, SP 150. With the approval of the concentration advisor, these courses may be replaced by linguistics courses in another Romance language.

Up to four courses from study abroad can be applied towards concentration requirements, provided that they have been approved by the concentration advisor.
