Mathematics

Concentrators in mathematics should complete the prerequisites by the end of their sophomore year. Those interested in graduate study in mathematics are encouraged to take MA 113, 114, 126, 141, and 154. It is strongly recommended that students take MA 101 before taking MA 113.

Standard program for the A.B. degree

Prerequisites

multivariable calculus and linear algebra (e.g., MA 18/52; 18/54; 20/52; 35/54; or the equivalent).

Program

(1) MA 153; (2) five other 100- or 200-level Mathematics courses (one of which may be replaced, with the approval of the concentration advisor, by mathematically-oriented courses in science, economics, or applied mathematics).

Standard program for the Sc.B. degree

Prerequisites

same as for the A.B. degree.

Program

(1) MA 113/114; (2) MA 153 and either 154 or 156; (3) four other 100- or 200-level Mathematics courses; (4) four courses in science, economics, or applied mathematics approved by the concentration advisor.

Honors

Honors degrees may be recommended for students who have exhibited high achievement in mathematics. Candidates must complete at least eight mathematics courses at the 100 or 200 level with sufficiently good grades and must write an honors thesis under the guidance of a faculty member. The honors thesis is usually written while the candidate is enrolled in MA 197. The candidate should consult with the concentration advisor for the precise grade requirements.
