Astronomy

Standard concentration programs do not now exist; however, it is possible to arrange an independent concentration in astronomy. For advice on such a program, see Professor Targan, Department of Physics. For those students desiring an excellent undergraduate preparation for graduate work in astronomy, the recommended courses listed below, or their equivalents, should be taken.

Suggested programs for the A.B. degree

Prerequisites: as in Sc.B. program below. Courses: PHYS 0270, 0470, 0500, 0560, 1410; MATH 0180, and one additional mathematics or applied mathematics course beyond the level of MATH 0180. Recommended: PHYS 0210, 0220, or 0270.

Suggested program for the Sc.B. degree

Prerequisites: PHYS 0050, 0060, (or 0030, 0040 or 0070, 0160); MATH 0190, 0200 (or 0170, 0180).

Courses: PHYS 0270, 0470, 0500, 0560, 1280, 1410, 1510, 1530, and one other course in physical sciences. Mathematics: two courses beyond MATH 0180 or 0200 including choices from applied mathematics. In addition, courses in computer programming are recommended.
