Programs for Junior Faculty
The Junior Faculty Roundtable
Sponsored by the Dean of the Faculty, the Junior Faculty Roundtable is a series of gatherings designed to bring new and junior faculty together with campus leaders and senior colleagues to explore a variety of faculty issues. Junior Faculty Roundtable sessions focus on topics such as teaching large classes, leading seminars, teaching graduate students, integrating teaching and research, documenting teaching effectiveness, and preparing for annual reviews. Some sessions are open to junior faculty from all four academic divisions, while others are designed specifically for junior faculty from either the humanities and social sciences or life and physical sciences. The Center's Faculty Fellows regularly participate in the Junior Faculty Roundtable. Click here for the current schedule.
The Faculty Mentoring Program for Junior Faculty (for Teaching)
Two senior faculty members, one from the humanities and social sciences and one from the life and physical sciences, serve as the Center's Faculty Fellows. They are responsible for mentoring and consulting with new and junior faculty on their teaching concerns. Throughout the year, the Center provides a variety of opportunities, including the Junior Faculty Roundtable described immediately below, for new and junior faculty to meet informally with their faculty mentors. Interested faculty should contact the Center.
In addition, the Office of the Dean of the Faculty, the Office of the Dean of Medicine and Biological Sciences, and the ADVANCE Program at Brown have collaborated to create a Faculty Mentoring Program. This program provides a formal mechanism for tenure-track faculty to connect with a mentor outside of their own department, with whom they can speak candidly and share their experiences and concerns. Mentors help the faculty member learn to negotiate the academic environment at Brown by providing information about university policies, culture, and resources.
