History of BUPA

The Brown University Postdoctoral Association (BUPA) was founded in 2000 to address the needs of postdoctoral appointees at Brown and provide a link between postdoctoral researchers and the administration.  The original founders were active in the Neuroscience Postdoc Club, but wanted to expand the scope of the club to help benefit postdocs in all departments. BUPA assessed the status and concerns of postdoctoral researchers through a survey administered in October of 2000 to approximately 120 postdoctoral researchers across campus.  The information gathered through the survey indicated that postdoctoral researchers at Brown have concerns similar to those identified for postdoctoral researchers in a nation-wide study conducted by the Committee on Science, Engineering and Public Policy (COSEPUP).  Like postdoctoral researchers at other universities, we found that the three major concerns of postdoctoral researchers at Brown were: salary, benefits, and career development.  Since 2000, BUPA has met regularly with the administration to address these issues.

As of late 2004, we serve a community of approximately 200 postdoctoral researchers in all academic disciplines across the university.
