Ivy Conference Playoff
Brown First XV v. Cornell University First XV

Brown was soundly defeated in the First Round of the Ivy Conference Playoffs by a very strong and organized Cornell team that took the Bears out of the match early with very strong running, support at the breakdowns and counter rucking that foiled Brown’s pattern of play for the first 60 minutes of the match. In spite of Cornell’s size advantage, Brown held its own in the scrums and with better execution might have attacked successfully from its lineouts, but fell well short of expectations with poor tackling and commitment at the breakdowns.

To make matters worse, Brown lost its most seasoned and accomplished back in the first few minutes of the match as center and former captain John Landers was forced to the sideline with a hamstring injury and was unable to return to the field. “Ders'” absence saw Cornell immediately take control and score 5 first half tries with only a Brown penalty kick in the 14th minute for 3 points and a 31 point first half deficit.

Strong individual efforts by some were not enough as a change in momentum would have required a mistake free and best effort performance by the entire team. With the match result not in question at the start of the second half, both teams made substitutions and Brown, to its credit, played to the end, scoring two converted tries in the last few minutes of the match to save a bit of face. The twenty two man squad that was selected for the Playoffs included only 5 seniors so the retuning players could be formidable team if they make a full commitment for next fall.

In the other playoff match, Harvard defeated Princeton and will play Cornell on Sunday, April 10th to determine the Ivy Conference representative in the National D-1AA Rugby Playoffs

This match which eliminates Brown from any further playoff competition ends the spring 2016 XV’s season. Brown will finish its season at the Ivy 7’s Championships which will be held at Dartmouth on Saturday, April 30.
