Brown v. University of Albany (SUNY)
Providence, Rhode Island
September 3, 2016: 12:00 P.M.
The University of Albany (SUNY) traveled to Brown for a pre-Ivy Conference match to give each team a reality check after a week of pre-season practices. The match was a competitive event for both teams as the 17 point tie score indicates. As much as Brown seemed to have the edge in set pieces and structure, individual mistakes and penalties caused both teams to miss good opportunities in the first half with the match tied at zero after 30 minutes of play.
Brown took the play to Albany in the second half with tries by captain Joe Paolino, lock Francis Rosenberg and first year #8 Jae Kim. Kicker and senior Pete McHugh unfortunately converted only one of the tries which proved to be critical at the end of the match.
Albany countered with a penalty kick and two converted tries with the final score at full time under the posts. The subsequent conversion tied the match at 17. Both of Albany’s scores were the result of Brown lapses but Brown’s points were the result of solid offensive attacking pressure at the Albany goal line.
After 60 minutes of rugby, Brown and Albany played an additional 20 minutes to give everyone some match time, but no further scoring occurred.
All in all, the Brown team looked reasonably prepared with 4 first year Brown Ruggers putting forth solid efforts and 6 seniors providing structure and patience. As players continue to return to Brown from their summer jobs and commitments, the squad should fill out, and we expect a good crop of new players to take up the game.
Captain Joe Paolino noted that attendance and effort during pre-season has been very good. He is optimistic about the upcoming season. Team President Peter McHugh thinks our new players have already made a positive impact on the program and former team captain and senior John Landers feels this team could be better than last fall’s Brown team.
Brown travels to Wellesley, Massachusetts next Saturday, September 10 to take on Babson College in another pre-Ivy Conference match. The kick-off will be at 3:00 P.M. with two matches scheduled.
