Throughout Japan, a popular snack is 'yakitori,' or, grilled chicken on skewers, but my town is famous for also having 'butayaki' — grilled pork on skewers. No one else in Japan has thought to do this yet. I am developing a plan for grilled beef on skewers and only lack a name. This will blow all of Japan's mind and make my town even more famous. I am teaching English in the high schools here, which means I have lots of time to scheme about grilled beef and returning my town to prominence. My email address is browncaptain81@yahoo.com. Perhaps I was still living in the post-college glow when I chose that one. I am done glowing and wish I could change my address to something catchy and wacky like my Japanese friends here — "Fumi-style-ma-cherie...", "honey-bunny-sugar-pear@...", "shorty1000get-tall@..." and so on. Favorite ultimate memories at Brown: - The way winning Nationals felt. - The way losing twice at Nationals felt. - The way not making Nationals my senior year felt. - Having #81 tossed at me by Justin just before my first game. Wearing the old Brown basketball warmup. - The clip of Franz celebrating his goal on the 2000 Nationals video. Zip bringing a funnel to spring break, thereby inching us closer to varsity status. Ian and Olivier and me talking quietly in the hallway of the hotel on the morning before the National Championship. Fortch and Kromer debating the volume of a Wilmington, NC water tower. Korb and Ross talking. Moses and John and me out front of "Whitey's" in Wilmington. - Fulfilling my promise to win the spring break double-disc tourney in a landslide. Claiming my team would win the 3-on-3 tourney freshman year and getting pounded. - Driving to spring break while other people slept. Sleeping while other people drove. Having the team come to my house in Atlanta. The feeling that, on many days, no team could touch us. |
