![]() Back to Index of Newsletters March 31, 2003 This weekend, B-Mo played at Ultimax, held in Greenville, North Carolina. Although we take Ultimax seriously, our goal for the weekend is primarily to improve rather than to win at all costs. Our coaches, Nathan and Tom, as tradition, did not attend and so to simplify matters, and because our goal for the weekend was to improve, we decided to sub players in and out of games evenly. It was a huge success!!! Be it a lack of pressure to perform, the guarantee of playing time, or just because they had improved, players stepped up and excelled. On Saturday, we played against two weak teams and two regional rivals. Final scores:On Sunday we drew a match up with UNC Chapel Hill, in the quarters. Sticking to our method of substitution from the day before we found ourselves in a 6-4 hole. After calling a timeout we decided that our difficulties were not personal related but rather stemmed from our lack of mental resolve. Every single one of us stepped it up and started to battle for every point, running past the UNC players on defense, getting the turnovers, and then running past them on offense for the goals. We took half 8-7 and ran to a 12-9 victory. In the semifinals we were matched up with North Carolina State. They were a good team; thanks to some sloppy play on our part and opportunistic play on theirs they built a 8-4 lead at the half. After half we rallied with heart, determination, a stifling zone D, and a crisp endzone offense. We ran off break after break and cut the lead to 11-9 and then to 13-12. Lady Mo was on our side but a couple lucky breaks for them let them escape with a 15-13 victory. NC State is a good team and went on to beat Oregon 15-11 in the finals. We should have beaten them and we will if we're lucky enough to play them at Nationals this year. After our game with NCSU, we made the long trip home to snowy RI. We left Greensville at 5pm in our 45 seater coach and arrived at Brown about 10:30 this morning. Both Ben Spung and I were a little surprised to see the other at our 12 p.m. math class and I was surprised to see another half dozen or so of my teammates in the Ratty, book-by-tray, at lunch. I guess we're really student-athletes, whatever that means. We all had a great spring break. The beach house was as beautiful as you can imagine. If you want the stories, you're going to have to talk to my teammates privately as this, unfortunately, can't be the forum for those pleasant exchanges. We head to UMassacre in two weeks. Sincerely, |
