![]() Back to Index of Newsletters April 12, 2004 This weekend, in New Haven, B-Mo went 7-0, capturing the Ivy League Championship and the Yale Cup. To decide both titles, this tournament's format was a little different. For Saturday's play, the Ivy League teams were placed in two pools of four—a crossover game between the winners of the two pools determining the Ivy League title. On Sunday (with seeding derived from Saturday's pool play games) a traditional single-elimination tournament was played for the Yale Cup. Brown played Dartmouth, UPenn, and Harvard in pool play. Although starting sluggishly, Brown pulled away from Dartmouth to win their first game 15-8. Against Penn, Brown jumped out to an early 8-2 lead and cruised to a 15-5 victory. In windy conditions and against a competitive Harvard team, B-Mo played well. They intensely pressured the Red Line on defense, and move the disc patiently on offense. Final score: Brown 10, Harvard 4. In the Ivy League Championship, Brown matched up with Cornell. In blustery conditions, B-Mo had to battle for every point. The game was tight for the most part, the score tied at 10s late in the game. Then Brown picked up a notch, putting in 4 straight to secure a 14-10 victory. On Sunday morning, B-Mo first drew Boston University. Some slipups early on kept B.U. in the game but Brown got their act together and rolled to a 14-8 victory. In the semifinals, Brown and Wesleyan matched up. Historically, there has been little love between these two teams and Sunday was no exception. Brown wore down Wesleyan with their superior team speed, decision-making, and execution. Through the game was close through half time, a second half run allowed B-Mo to pull away with a 15-9 victory. The Brown-Tufts final was a treat for the spectators. Both teams being coached by teammates on Boston's fabled Death or Glory (DoG), the game displayed a high quality college ultimate. Crisp cutting and throwing was contested by fierce marking and tough man-to-man defense all game. The first half was very even, Tufts making the first run of the game and Brown coming back with a 3-0 run of their own. At halftime the score was Tufts 8-7. After the break, Brown tightened the screws. They played shutdown man-to-man defense and upon getting the turnover, they marched the disc patiently up field to score. Tufts had no answer, the E-Men's offense cutters couldn't get open and when they lost the disc, they were unable to get it back. Brown went on an 8-2 run. Final score: Brown 15-10. Thank you (from all of us) to the alums and parents that traveled to New Haven to cheer us on. Sectionals are in two weekends and Regionals in four. With the weather in Providence finally improving, we get to start practicing outside! This Tuesday will mark only our third "on grass" practice of the year. The wins at Yale Cup are a start; practice will give us a chance to improve so that we can take it to the Northeast and the nation in the upcoming College Series. Neale Mahoney |
