To alumni, parents, and friends of Brownian Motion-

I hope that all is well in your neck of the woods. Spring is finally upon us... and B-Mo has completed its early season travels. The boys are now in North Carolina for spring break after competing at Centex in Austin, TX. You can find the Centex write-up below. Indeed, I have a special treat: a guest author! Owen Miller '09 fills us in on the news from Austin and NC.

Indeed, all parts of our program were playing this past weekend. Brown B competed at Ultimax in Greenville, NC, but finished 0-6 at the hands of tough pool play. Their pool included the likes of Tufts, George Washingon, and Williams. Brown C competed at Beasterns in Wilmington, NC. Representing Brown with valor, CFunk managed to serve up some Yellow Jacket in a 15-10 win over Georgia Tech B. Both teams are looking ahead to Lemony Spring in a week and a half on their way to Sectionals/Regionals.

As always, we need your continued support. Now that we are looking ahead to the end of the season, it is imperative that we continue to receive donations to help us achieve our goal: Columbus, OH, for nationals. Please follow this link (and select Men's Ultimate) for your donations: www.sportsfoundation.brown.edu . To date, we have raised over $2,700... Help us to keep up this pace! We just need $2,300 more to reach our goal!

Also, if you'd like to add a friend (or yourself) to our Alumni/Parents/Friends Listserv, forward them this e-mail or have them follow the instructions in this link: www.sportsfoundation.brown.edu/newsletters .

Lastly, you can expect a hard-copy, limited-edition Brownian Motion 2006 Newsletter in May. Be sure to add yourself to our Alumni/Parents/Friends Listserv if you're not already on it so as to receive this item.

Take it easy, and I'll hopefully see you on the sidelines at Yale Cup in a couple of weeks.

Best,
Jon

Owen Miller's Centex Write-Up:

Hey y'all and greetings from Nag's Head, North Carolina, where the Brown women's and men's ultimate teams are enjoying their very own beachfront property for Spring Break. The sun is out, the tide is high, and the air smells of... haddock. Needless to say, it is beautiful here in the land of the first flight and Brownian Motion has earned its right to relax and soak in the salty sea spray after a grueling eight-game tournament in Austin, Texas- Centex.

The team left for the tournament on Thursday, March 23, after what was for most a long week of mid-terms and papers typical of pre-Spring Break cramming. Two of the five cars left early and were lucky enough to make a pit-stop at the comfortable abode of Lynn and Tom Goldberg (parents of Daniel Goldberg '07) in Westport, CT for some CFC (Connecticut Fried Chicken) and fruit salad. They left with spirits high and stomachs full for the day's final destination: Baltimore, Maryland, where Georgia Smith (mother of Noel Fetting-Smith '09) was gracious enough to provide pillows to rest some weary heads and a shuttle service to the airport in the wee hours of the morn'. Oh, and I almost forgot the midnight meal fit for kings: complete with spicy sausage, crab dip, and melt-in-your-mouth bread.

With delicious leftover chicken sandwiches in hand, the team made its way via plane to Austin, Texas, on Friday morning. Friday was indeed a day of sleep, recovery, burritos, and hospitality. After the team stuffed itself with various combinations of rice, beans, cheese, and meat in a tortilla at Freebird's Burritos, they made their way to Clark and Catherine Heidrick's scenic Texas home. The Heidricks, along with Chris (Clark's brother) and Barabara Heidrick, were the team's wonderful and gracious hosts for the weekend, and their kindness and effort they put into making the team comfortable should be commended. A hearty meal and some NCAA basketball topped off the night, and the boys split off to their respective houses for a good night's sleep.

Here's where the action started. Saturday was busier than a honeybee for B-Mo, who played a total of five games to 15. However, with a little jogging, a little stretching, and a squirt of sunblock, the team was ready for anything.

The first game was against Michigan. It took a little while for B-Mo to warm up and get back into the ultimate grind, so Michigan was able to pull ahead early and ride that lead to the end. At one point, when the momentum was with the Motion, our own Jeff "Wonderboy" Erickson '09 pulled off a spectacular Callahan. What's a Callahan, you ask? Well, it's when a player (on defense) catches a throw from the opposing team in the opposing team's end zone for a goal- no easy task. However, Michigan hung on to win the game 13-10.

Next, B-Mo faced Western Washington, who were no match for the so-called "noise!" that was brought on to them. Captain Colin Mahoney '07 had an especially great game, scoring roughly half of the team's 15 goals. One might say that B-Mo "Mahoneyed" W. Washington. Final score: Brown 15, W.Washington 9.

The third game saw B-Mo against the University of California - San Diego (UCSD). After a heated match against UCSD at the Stanford Tournament, B-Mo knew they'd be facing an intense team. They stepped it up and lead several times during the game, but UCSD threw the old zone trick that B-Mo couldn't quite handle. UCSD won in the end, 15-10.

The fourth straight game B-Mo played was against Wisconsin. Now, before I say anything else, let it be known that Wisconsin ended up beating the University of Florida in the finals to win Centex. With that said, B-Mo put up a good fight. Jonas Levi (RISD '08) lit up Wisconsin a couple times, snatching discs like they were hotcakes. Wisconsin triumphed, however, 15-7.

Finally, B-Mo concluded the exhausting day with a game against Stanford. Colin Mahoney's older brother, Neale (Brown/BMo '05), lead Stanford's 15-5 win to put an end to the tiring day.

Following the games, Brown was finally able to relax, nurse any wounds (physical and mental), reflect on the day's events, and enjoy some hearty Texas barbecue. Ultimate players at Centex munched on Poké Joe's barbecue steak, sausage, beans, and veggie burritos while Stanford faced off against UCSD in the evening showcase game. After the game, no time was wasted getting back to both of the Heidrick households for hot showers and warm beds (and aloe vera). If there's one thing the team learned about Texas, it is that Texas is hot! It really is no joke! Farmer tans aside, the weather was beautiful all weekend.

Sunday was a bit less intense. With their first game at 8:00 AM, B-Mo woke up at near dawn and prepared for their first game of three in the second consolation bracket.

N.C. State was the first contender B-Mo played. A tough loss was dealt to Brown as N.C. State pulled off a 12-8 win. A better game was to come...

Next came Indiana. They barely saw what hit them as B-Mo regained confidence to hand Indiana a 9-3 loss on a silver platter. Delicious!

Finally, B-Mo ended with a game against Pittsburgh. Despite some fine showings by freshmen Grant LeBeau and Dane Jensen, Pitt put the game away with a 13-6 win. Despite the slightly discouraging final record (2-6), B-Mo is continuously improving, gelling, and getting better. These tournaments are a chance to play some great ultimate, get practice, and have barrels full of fun, and we are looking forward to our next tournament for a chance to play more pretty, pretty games of ultimate.

For now, B-Mo and all the other ultimate players from Brown will take a load off and enjoy the gorgeous spring weather here in North Carolina. We'd like to thank all those who made the trek way down to Texas to watch the games, those who provided delicious munchies, and those who hosted us, of course.
