2008 Brown Sailing Alumni/Parent Regatta

New York Yacht Club, Newport, RI
The 2008 Brown Sailing Alumni/Parent Regatta was a huge success with over 70 people showing up for the sailing and more than 125 joining us for our great event following the racing. Huge thanks to Sam '78, P'11 and Ann Mencoff P'11 for hosting a great celebration for Brown Sailing at their magnificent Newport home. Steve King '91 and Nicole Peters of the Brown Sports Foundation did an amazing job putting this event together for Brown Sailing. We cannot thank you both enough for all that you do for us.
A special thanks as well to Dayton Carr '63, Dr. Thomas Enright P'08, and Tony and Judy Knowles P'10 for their on-the-water support and use of their beautiful boats for spectators. Thanks to Amanda Schreyer '00 and Tucker Adams '11 as well for braving the elements and helping with the race management.
I would also like to thank the Brown Sailing Team for all of their hard work getting the fleet to Newport and getting it ready for this event and Nationals. Salve Regina University was kind enough to lend us eight of their boats, Sail Newport gave us marks for our courses, and of course the New York Yacht Club and Brad Dellenbaugh for hosting us and making us feel so welcome at this prestigious club.
The conditions for sailing were a bit wet and chilly, but that didn't stop our dedicated Alumni and Parents from racing in the 26-boat fleet. As far as I know, this is the largest Alumni/Parent event I have ever heard of or seen in college sailing. Two epic races in 15-20 knot winds and huge chop on Narragansett Bay. Special awards to Pete Evans '83, P'11 as the oldest alum to compete and to Brad Gibbs '93 from the UK for the farthest traveled. Congrats to Whitney Besse '03 and Sarah Hale '02.5 for being the top Alumni boat finishing second, and to our women's A-division boat of Charlotte Lipschitz '10 and Meris Tombari '08 on the overall victory.
Thanks to everyone for coming and for your support as we begin the 2008 Nationals as competitors and hosts. We hope you will come and cheer us on.
Go Bears!
