Mahler-Haug ‘09 and Strammer ‘11 Named to All-American Team
Brown just returned from the Intercollegiate Sailing Association (ICSA) College Sailing National Championship, finishing fifth place out of the top 18 teams in college sailing at the Women’s National Championship. Held at the St. Francis Yacht Club in San Francisco, CA from May 25-27, the Brown women had to first qualify for the National Finals by sailing at the Women’s National Semi-Finals on May 25. With an eighth place finish at the semi’s, Brown moved on to the two-day National Championship.
Sailing for Brown at the Semi-Finals were skipper Charlotte Lipschitz ’10 (Chevy Chase, MD) and crews Allyson Russell ’11 (Waterbury Center, VT) and Cecilia Strombeck ’11 (Goteborg, Sweden) in A-division, and skipper Elizabeth Barry ’11 (Riverside, CT) and crews Maria Mahler-Haug ’09 (Branford, CT) and Jenny Adler ’11 (Manchester, MA) in B-division. Brown finished 11th in A-division and 3rd in B-division, just three points out of first.
The Women’s Nationals were sailed May 26-27 in windy conditions ranging from 15-25 knots on the city front in San Francisco in California Flying Juniors (CFJ’s). Brown sailed the youngest team at the event, consisting of one freshmen and three sophomores and steadily improved throughout the regatta. The women were in ninth after the first day and had a terrific second day to move up to fifth place overall by the last race. Freshmen skipper Emily Dellenbaugh ’12 (Easton, CT) and crew Cecilia Strombeck finished an impressive fifth place in A-division. Elizabeth Barry and crew Jenny Adler finished fourth in B-division losing a tiebreaker for third.
Yale won the event with 148 points, followed by the College of Charleston (157), Boston College (165), Old Dominion (166), and Brown with 197 points. This is the second year in a row that the Brown women have been top five at the National Championship. Last year’s team finished second at the Nationals losing to Boston College by just two points.
On Wednesday, June 3rd the ICSA All-American Team was announced. Maria Mahler-Haug was named an All-American Crew for the second year in a row, after another stellar season in the front of the boat. Her primary skipper, Fred Strammer ’11 (Nokomis, FL), was named an Honorable-Mention All-American Coed Skipper. Fred had a terrific first year sailing at the varsity level.
