Tournament News

Regionals, Portsmouth RI, May 8-9 (A team)

Record: 6-1 (Regional Qualifier)
A daunting schedule did not faze Disco in this competitive tournament to determine the winners of the 3 New England bids to Nationals. Stumbling in the first game against an energetic Tufts, Disco picked it up and defeated the remaining teams in the pool. Due to a 3-way tie at the end of pool play, however, Disco ended up finishing third in the pool after point differential, and so found themselves with the prospect of having to defeat three more teams in a single elimination bracket in order to take back their bid to Nationals.

Williams was the first opponent in a very rainy game, and although they fought hard, Disco kept the demanding lead they had built in the first half to win the game 15-8. The next opponent was Yale, a regional rival that put it all out on the field with intense defense and aggressive offense. This game became a nailbiter in the second half until Disco pulled away at the very end to take the win 15-13. This put Disco in the backdoor finals against the only team that had beaten them all tournament - Tufts. The tide seemed to have turned, however, as Disco played confidently against the worn-out Tufts team to revenge their loss the previous day and win the coveted bid to Nationals.

Nationals, Burlington WA, May 28-30 (A team)
Record: 2-3 (Quarterfinalists)
After a long season of competitive tournaments, team-building, and dedicated practice, Disco Inferno arrived at College Nationals with juice, fire, heart and desire. Despite some disappointing finishes in earlier in the spring, Disco laid it all on the line and played the best Ultimate that they had all season, defeating fellow regional qualifier Dartmouth after having lost to them twice in a row prior to Nationals. Although Disco suffered two losses in pool play against eventual finalist Carleton and semifinalist UC-San Diego, the win over Dartmouth put us in the pre-quarters with a shot at entering the championship bracket.

Facing U Virginia in the pre-quarter game, a team that hadn't lost to anyone yet that season but that hadn't, as it has been pointed out, played anyone outside of their region before Nationals, Disco found themselves in a heated battle for the quarterfinal berth. Numerous calls and many hard-fought points later, Disco emerged victorious. This put Disco in the quarterfinals against UC-Davis, a skilled team that proved too much for Disco to handle. UC-Davis went on to win the championship against Carleton.

Tournament News

Sectionals, Providence RI, Apr 17
Record: (A)2-0 (1st), (B)0-2 (4th)
Disco Inferno hosted College Sectionals at home this year, at the new Marvel Club Sports Field Complex, located across from the Brown stadium where the old Marvel gym used to be. Sunny skies, relatively gentle winds, and balmy temperatures made for a great day of ultimate, as Disco A defeated Disco B and Yale to take 1st place in the section. Disco A looked very confident and strong, and Disco B played with great spirit and intensity throughout the day against Disco A and Wesleyan.

Yale Cup, New Haven CT, Apr 24-25
Record: (A)5-1 (3/4th), (B)0-6 (16th)
Both Discos made the trip to sunny New Haven this past weekend to play in a surprisingly warm tournament against most of the rest of the region's teams. Disco A kept their 2nd seed in the first day, defeating Wesleyan, Dartmouth, and Vassar in pool play and Haverford in the afternoon's crossover game. Disco B played hard all day, and kept heart even after losing several players to injury. Sunday dawned sunny as well, and Disco A came out strong in the quarterfinals against UMass, playing a crisp, smooth game. In the repeat game against Dartmouth for the semis, however, Disco A was unable to rally a victory. Although Yale Cup ended earlier than hoped, Disco is hungry to revenge their loss at Regionals and take a bid for Nationals!

Regionals will be held in Portsmouth RI, May 8-9, so please come to support us as we battle for a bid to compete with the nation's best college teams in Seattle WA.

A Team News

Stanford Invite, Palo Alto CA, Mar 6-7
Record: 3-4 (13th)
Disco enjoyed a weekend playing under the sun on grass after a month of track practices and nights on the roof, but came away with fewer wins than hoped. Saturday's pool play began strongly with a dominating win over Whitman, but tough losses to UC-Santa Cruz and Stanford led to a close crossover game against Texas, in which Disco endured another hard loss. That loss landed Disco in the consolation brackets on Sunday, where Disco lost an extremely close first round game against UCLA (coached by B-Mo alumnus Alex Korb '02). Disco went on to win the next two games against Michigan and Dartmouth.
Many thanks are in order to Nancy and John Cassidy, and Rebecca Center, for their hospitality and the use of their lovely homes. We hope you enjoy the children's book you inspired (the songs can be found in the Story section).

Centex, Austin TX, Mar 20-21
Record: 2-4 (11th)
The most competitive tournament of the season proved to be a bit of an uphill battle for Disco, who suffered 2 close losses to Wisconsin and Colorado before falling to UC-San Diego to go 0-3 in pool play. On Sunday, Disco defeated Illinois before losing to Texas in the consolation semis, leading to a redemptive win over Wisconsin in the final game to finish in 11th place.

Fools Fest, Fredericksburg VA, Apr 2-4
Record: 2-5 (10th)
After a relaxing team bonding week on the beach in North Carolina, Disco had the pleasure of playing at Fools Fest, a notoriously fun and well-run 3-day tournament catering to themed and reunion teams. Fortunately, both Brown men and women's A teams were offered bids.
Friday was cold, windy, and rainy (familiar weather to our roof-hardened veterans), but Disco was unable to use whatever meteorological advantage we had against the wily wiles of tricksy club teams Pounce and Dookleberry Pie. Saturday proved to be a bit more equatable, as Disco lost to Lower Canada and Tigger but took a definitive win against Sirens. With a pool play record of 1-4, Disco placed in Division III for Sunday, where we battled 40 mph gusty winds in a resounding win over UPenn Venus in the Div III semis before losing against the previous day's Sirens in the Div III finals.

Upcoming:
Disco A looks ahead to Sectionals, held this year at Brown's own Marvel club sports field complex (across from the stadium) all day on Saturday, April 17th. Disco B will be there, as well as Yale and Wesleyan. Please come to support both A and B teams!
