Clambake 2000 Report

Red Tide Clambake is touted as one of the greatest tournaments of the fall, and this year's was no exception. From the crazy bids just to be invited (Brown women agreed to clean up the fields after the tournament, but other bids involved a Sunday morning serenade and a frisbee related monopoly game), to the food, frisbee, and fun, Clambake 2000 held up to the hype. Brown Disco Inferno brought a spirited squad of 14 to this two day tournament located at Bowdoin college in Maine. Seasoned veterans, first years, A team, and B team players made for an exciting mix that showed the potential of Brown women's ultimate. Disco played its first game of the day against a Maine club team, Hussey Sound. The women from college hill came out strong with a surprising but uncontested victory against the ladies of Maine. Brown then faced two more experienced club teams, Bodacious and the Chrome Ladies. Despite losses in these games and distraction from the Chrome Ladies headwear, Brown used the higher level of play to improve their game and bolster their team defense. With a cool and muddify-ing Maine rain showering from above, Disco packed up, set up the tents, and got ready for a night of clambake food, blueberry beer, and partying Beershmellows were invented by two creative sophomores. The next morning, all the teams gathered in the aftermath of that party for the traditional breakfast pancakes served up by the Harvard men's team in drag. A special treat appeared in the form of another men's player, serenading those assembled with his guitar and soulful vocal talents. Fully awake by then, Disco Inferno descended upon the fields at Bowdoin and played a hard fought game against the Swarthmore Warmothers. The Warmothers, like several other teams, favored playing a zone defense against us to take advantage of the wet and windy conditions. What they might not have anticipated is the dangerous adaptability of Disco Inferno. The Brown women quickly got it together and executed some very effective zone offense, with Meera Shah, Danielle Schwartz, Jamie Olson, and Shirley Wu patiently handling the disc in the back, and the great work of poppers Julia Cline and Rachel Rosen advancing Disco down the field. Although disco eventually lost, it was an well-played, intense, and spirited game that gave everyone a good taste of things to come. At the end of the tournament, the Brown women agreed that the team had improved tremendously since the day before, with hard playing and incredible spirit all around. After fulfilling their bid, Disco Inferno went home hungry and tired, but with a good feeling about the season in store.

Disco Inferno headed down to Bowdoin to play in Maine’s Clambake September 23 and 24. The Brown women started out the tournament with a win against Hussy Sound. Playing their first game together as a team, they relied on flow and strong defense to secure a 15-5 win. Despite losses in their next two games, the team focused on team defense and consistently got better throughout the tournament. Disco ended the weekend with a close game against Swarthmore. Swarthmore started out the game with an early lead but Disco made a strong comeback during the second half, to end the game in a close two-point loss. Despite rain and cold weather, Brown strengthened their playing ability and had a great time.
