Easterns 2001 Report

On March 22nd, Disco Inferno drove to Wilmington, North Carolina to play in one of the premier ultimate tournaments of the season, Easterns. Saturday would prove a hard one for the team, they were slow to warm up during what they knew would be a tough game against Colorado. Cheered on by the men's team, Disco decided to show everyone just what they were made of after half-time by playing awesome defense, and running the chilly offense they are known for. Layouts by captain Pauline Lauterbach '02 served to fire everyone up as they would the entire weekend. Freshmen Jen Kim '04 helped get the offense running, catching even the most impossible discs. They were just getting going, when Colorado managed to score to end the game 14-12. Another tough game against Tufts was next, and with the increased wind Disco seemed a little panicky, hesitant to play with the confidence they needed to to win the game. After losing, however, Brown grew tired of being complacent, and psyched themselves up for a game against UNC Chapel Hill. Brown came out strong, proving that they were one of the teams to beat this semester. Captains Peri Kurshan '01 and Sarah Cook '01 led their team to a huge victory by playing great defense and making great decisions on offense. Danielle Schwartz '02 and Meera Shah '02 handled the disc flawlessly on zone-o points, destroying the defense played against them.

Fresh off of a victory, Brown arrived on Sunday morning hungry to win. In a game against Duke (who had beaten Disco at CCC this past fall), Disco pulled out all of the stops. Julie Falender '03, Julia Cline '02 and Emily Bubbers '03 proved to be unstoppable forces in the end zone. The three members of team tall made great receptions and played huge on defense. After Duke, Brown faced UGA in the quarter finals, a traditional rival against whom they had always played spirited games. The Georgia girls came out to a lead, but Brown quickly caught up and the teams were playing point for point. Great, consistent defense enabled Brown to hold UGA back, and "sick" grabs by Jessica Guffey '02 and impeccably timed cuts from the back of the stack by Sarah Ross-Viles '02 made Disco excel on offense. Disco Inferno played better than they had all season, only to lose 13-11 to the Ho-Dawgs.
