Spring 2003 Reports

Stanford Invite

The A team traveled to sunny CA to compete in Stanford's annual invitational tournament. Having never laced up cleats or stepped foot on unfrozen ground yet this season, Disco came out a little shaky at the start of Saturday, but shook the sillies out in executing a decisive upset over Oregon to go undefeated in pool play. Sunday's quarterfinal game was arguably the most intense of the tournament, with a solid Penn State forcing Disco to up the energy and drive. With points punctuated with layout Ds, breakmarks, and snappy offense, the players of Disco proved that they had juice to burn when it mattered. The semifinals followed minutes later, and although the talented and athletic Stanford team (runners-up at Nationals last year) ended an unprecedented run for Disco, everyone agreed that the weekend was an incredible success.

Disco would like to thank Sarah RV and all the alums, friends, and relatives who came out to support us in CA, and especially the Cassidy's, for providing us with so much every time we're there. Thank you, Nancy and Cass - your generosity is truly inspiring, and we are so appreciative of everything you do for us.

Yale Cup

Both A and B teams competed at Yale Cup this weekend, in a tournament boasting 20 teams in both the open and women's divisions. The B team showed their spirit and huge learning curve in taking home the D bracket championship and a bottle of wine, with a win over Amherst in the D bracket finals. The A team had a fairly easy run to the finals, defeating Wellesley 13-7 in the quarters and Williams 15-4 in the semis, but lost in the finals to a strong MIT. Sectionals is next, where Disco will play against Yale for the first time this season, with eyes towards regionals, where a Brown/MIT rematch is quite probable.

Thanks to all the alums who braved the weather and went the distance to cheer us on or wish us well - Danielle Schwartz '02, Meera Shah '02, and Pauline Lauterbach '02; as well as observers Sarah Cook '01, Peri Kurshan '01, and Shana Cook '99.

Nationals

Disco went to Nationals in Austin TX, going 2-1 in pool play, defeating Iowa in the prequarters and #1 seed UC-Berkeley in a hard-fought quarterfinal before falling to regional rival MIT in the semis. MIT went on to battle Stanford in the finals, representing the NE region well in an epic game in which Stanford barely managed to eke out a 15-13 victory.
