La Tortuga Loca 2000 Report

We went with 13 women and played spectacularly, spending most of our day developing a phenomenal zone... To everyone who played in the cup congrats. It was one of the first times that I have personally ever played in the cup where I really felt that it was one unit. The cup's excellent performance was enabled by great team defense in the back field... the other team's players simply could not get open. Amazing d-blocks where had by Lexi, Rebecca, Julie, Lydia, Dena and Lindsie among others.

Saturday was really windy (probably 40 mph winds no joke), and it made scoring incredibly difficult even down wind. Allison's throws were on the mark though- thowing for the score on many, many occassions. The winds, though, made Ultimate a little crazy- we could not run our offense as we wished, and could not take advantage of our team's speed and athleticism as it made ultimate VERY slow. The Disco Bees proved truly adaptable though, and rose to the occassion- tying two of their games (had we strictly adhered to time caps- we would have won both of these, but we are a spirited bunch!) Although we lost our two other games to teams who were obviously much more experienced than us (Bucknell and RPI)- the Disco Bees were truly amazing in their encounters with only a-teams all day yesterday.

Rachel Weston, Alicia, Madelene and Elissa held their cool handling in zone o all day long. They were smart, making use of the excellent popping skills of Ro (yes, the other rachel) to move the disc up field. Note that the team also grew fond of hucking it (by Lydia and Allison- who knew Al could huck?) to any number of downfield receivers any time it seemed appropriate- which made for some rather exciting plays and scores.

Most of all, the Disco Bees played with heart and intensity, rising to the occassion yet again as no one could have ever predicted. It is for all these reasons that I love playing with this team, and am honored to lead them. They are a team of rising super stars.
