As demand for both oil and gas remain robust--propelled by energy needs in both the developed and the developing world, our industry needs to develop intelligent technology for use in harsh environments where oil & gas will be found. We present here the current challenges of adding oil and gas production capacity and describe how collaborative efforts with academia can improve knowledge and equipment to meet these challenges until substitute sources of energy become available.
