The dynamic behavior of drill strings is modeled by using nonlinear differential equations and appropriate discretization techniques. Both deterministic and stochastic models for the system excitation are considered.Options such as vibration assisted drilling are examined. Efficient approximate solutions are pursued by considering techniques such as equivalent linearization. The analytical solutions are supplemented by results from appropriate Monte Carlo studies.Parameter studies elucidating the advantages of various drilling assemblies/options are discussed.
