Field trips will be conducted during class time unless otherwise noted. On the day of a field trip,
the class will meet at Faunce Arch promptly at 10:30.
September 21: North Burial Ground, Providence On Thursday September 21 class will meet at the North Burial Ground in Providence. The North Burial Ground is 1.2 miles north of the campus, or about a 20 minute walk. Class will begin at 10:45. Go down College Hill and take a right on Benefit Street. Go past the intersection of North Main Street, past the University Heights shopping plaza, and past McDonalds. When you see the fire station on your left and Kentucky Fried Chicken on your right, you will see the Burial Ground ahead on your left, at the north west corner of Branch Avenue and North Main Street. Walk through the front gates past the gatehouse and up the hill to the right. We will meet at the bronze elk at the top of the hill. September 30: The John Stevens Shop, Newport Due to the size of the class, we will not be able to travel to Newport. Instead, a video or guest lecture on stone cutting will be presented during class on Thursday, September 30. Class will be held in room 219 of the CIT, as usual. The John Stevens Shop October 7: Rhode Island School of Design Museum, Providence On Thursday, October 7, class will meet at the Museum of Art of the Rhode Island School of Design at 224 Benefit Street. I will meet each section of students at the entrance to the Farrago Wing near the corner of Benefit and Waterman Streets at 10:30, 11:00, and 11:30. October 14: St. John's Burial Ground, Providence On Thursday, October 11, class will meet in the burying ground of St. John's Church in Providence. The Episcopal Cathedral and its burying ground are located on the block bounded by Benefit Street to the east, North main Street to the west, and Star and Church Streets to the north and south. Walk north on Benefit Street past no. 74, then take a brick walk on the left down the steps and into the burying ground. Class will meet at 10:45. November 2: Swan Point Cemetery, Providence On Tuesday, November 2, class will meet at Swan Point Cemetery, the so-called “rural cemetery” established on the outskirts of the City of Providence in 1847. You can take the class school bus there from Faunce Arch at 10:30, or you can bicycle or drive on your own. Swan Point Cemetery is located at 585 Blackstone Boulevard, about 3 miles from the Brown campus. Class will meet at the parking lot just inside the cemetery gates at 10:45. From campus, go east on Waterman Street to the Bread & Circus grocery store. Left at the light onto Butler Avenue North on Butler and merge into Blackstone Boulevard North on Blackstone 2 miles to the stone trolley shelter Right into the cemetery through the stone gates Parking lot on the right |
