News and Updates:

May 5:

A few reminders:

1. There is a voluntary field trip on Monday 12:30 - 5. If you have not signed up for it, just show up behind Walter Hall at 12:30.

2. Your course portfolio (including the rewrite of essay 3) is due by 5:00 PM on May 11. There is a box inside the front door of Walter Hall marked "bio 19 portfolios" -- just leave everything there. THIS IS AN ABSOLUTE DEADLINE -- NO EXTENSIONS!

3. We will review everything and write an evaluation of your work in the course. That will take a while and I will post a note here telling you when your portfolios are ready. If you will not be returning to Brown and are leaving before the 20th, leave the portfolio in a self-addressed envelope and I will mail it to you.

I will e-mail each of you your evaluation. The portfolios will be saved and made available next fall (or during the summer if you e-mail me).

4. Thanks to you all for an enjoyable semester. I learned a lot from you.

April 27:

There will be lectures next week. The final essay revision and B19 portfolio is due 11 May - not 7 May as previously announced. See handouts page for details.

April 15:

I have made up a pdf document with pictures of the species you will classify in section on Monday and Wednesday.

April 13:

Here is the link to the meiosis model I was using at the end of lecture. Take the time to really go through it for next week. This is a Shockwave presentation so your browser will need that viewer -- you can get it here.

April 9:

Here is a link to the "model" essays. Remember that these are to give you an idea of the kinds of essays we feel are most effective in meeting the assignment. None of them are perfect and all need some revisions. The point is to see what works well and use that as a model (style and approach) for rewriting your own essay.

February 22:

Here is the Homework Assignment and Section Assignment for next week. I will hand this out in class on Friday; just wanted you to have it in advance if you wanted to work on it.

The link to Darwin's 4th Chapter is: http://www.literature.org/authors/darwin-charles/the-origin-of-species-6th-edition/chapter-04.html

In lecture on Wednesday, I mentioned a few Creationist web sites to explore. Here they are -- it helps you define your understanding of evolution by examining the arguments against it (even though these are really extreme)

The Center for Scientific Creation

Thanks to the last page, here is a great link to an evolution perspective:

No Answers in Genesis!

And a cartoon for you to figure out from one of the creationist sites:

February 15:

To the discussion group. For some reason clicking on the link at the bottom of the page no longer works (here or on any other web page I have tried). So, to get to our news group follow these steps (for Netscape, I don't know the deal for Explorer). Please let me know if this doesn't work for you.

I haven't used newsgroups before:

Click here for the CIS document: Using Netscape for On-line Discussion Groups

I am using Netscape and have accessed news groups in the past:

1. Get into "Messenger"

2. Click on the icon labeled news.brown.edu (might be just news on cluster machines) or choose "Subscribe" in the FILE menu

3. Find the "Brown" folder and then the "Courses" folder and look for BI0019

4. Just check the box and click OK.

If anyone wants to e-mail me the instructions for Explorer, I'll post them here.

February 10:

Some announcements:

1. A copy of the quiz assignment for the week of 12-16 Feb. is in the "Assignments" section.

2. Next week only: The Wednesday section will meet in room 212 of the BioMed Center. Monday section still meets in B25.

3. I have posted some important links on Darwin, Evolution and Genetics in the "Library" section. Be sure to explore them!!

February 1:

Sections meet Mon. and Wed. 3 - 5 PM in BioMed Center B25 (lab in basement)

The best way to get there from Smith-B is to go in the Meeting Street door of the BMC. Go to the right and then left through the double doors. Follow that corridor to another door and go down the stairs to the bottom. The lab room is through the door on the right.

The section List and TA information are here.
