What exactly is In vitro fertilization(IVF)?

Literal meaning of in vitro is "in glass." It is an ART(Assisted Reproductive Technologies) procedure which involves four general steps. First eggs are removed from the ovaries. Second, ovum is exposed to spermatozoa outside the mother where the fertilization takes place. Culturing the fertilized eggs is the third step. Last step involves transferring of the resulting embryos into the woman's uterus through the cervix, a technique known as embryo transfer (ET). This revolutionary technique gave new insights into gamete interaction and early embryonic development, not to mention the new hope and miracle of pregnancies for couples with infertility problems.
