Methods of Terminating a Pregnancy at Different Stages of Pregnancy and Fetal Development

Lydia Warner and Alexa Rosenberg

Abortion, something an estimated 43% of women will experience by the time they are 45 years of age (1), is much more than a simple surgical procedure. It is a complex and controversial issue infused with moral and political ramifications that affect every human being. Debates center around questions about when life begins, who decides, and women's control over their own reproduction. Many sentiments, however, on either side of these debates are derived from erroneous information about the biology of the abortion procedure itself. The goal of this website is to provide accurate information about the various abortion methods at different stages of pregnancy and fetal development, examining how the procedures differ based on the stage of pregnancy and the biological mechanisms of the various abortion procedures. While the political and moral debates about abortion generally have no root in the medical science of the procedure itself, a correct understanding of the biology of the procedure is necessary for developing educated opinions about the issue of abortion.
