Dermal Skeleton: Skeletal Components

Dermal bone forms the paired midline plates that form the roof of the skull: the interparietal part of the occipital bones, the parietal bones, the frontal bones, the nasal bones, and the squamous parts of the temporal bones. These bones function as a protective case for the brain.

It also forms many upper jaw structures: the premaxilla, the maxilla, the squamosal portion of the temporalis, and the zygomatic on the outside and the palatine, vomer, and pterygoid laminae on the inside.

Lastly, the mandible and clavicle arise from dermal bone.
