Dermal Skeleton: Embryonic Origins

A layer of mesoderm covers the developing brain of the embryo: it is this migrating mesenchyme which gives rise to dermal bone, [B]. The roof and sides of the skull arise from migrating mesoderm and the jaw bones from neural crest originally associated with the branchial arches seen early in both ontology and phylogeny [A].
