Slug and CAMs

Migrating neural crest cells express N-CAM and N-cadherin cell adhesion molecules. These molecules are regulated by the zinc-finger gene Slug. The sequence of events that controls epithelial to mesenchymal transformations includes: decreasing cell adhesion, reduction in levels of N-CAM, loss of N-cadherin, and changes in integrins. These events are associated with the initiation of migration of neural crest or mesodermal mesochyme.
