TEACHING MATERIALS AND EXAMPLES

(note that most of the following links go to copies of the original site, as many of the originals are on password protected sites such as MyCourses and myevaluations.com. As these represent migrations of the original sites, some links may be broken).

Materials developed for undergraduate courses (all developed and organized by Dr. Boland)

Biomed 278 Introduction to Psychiatry

From 1997 - 2003 this was the primary psychiatry course for medical students. A copy of the site (circa 2002) can be found here.

Biomed 370 The Brain and Behavior

From 2004-2006, this course represented a merging of the Intro to Psychiatry Course and the Brain Neuroscience course taught by Dr. Salloway in the 1st year. One can go to the home page to get an overall look at the course, and the schedule page (this one copied from a 2005 version) leads one to materials for each subject arranged by pathology. The syllabus is now divided and integrated into each section. For a quick example, view the psychotic disorders page, which includes not only the annotated slides, but the relevant syllabus sections and associated readings.
    Biomed 365 Brain Sciences
From 2007 on, psychiatry and neurology were integrated into a combined Brain Sciences Course. These pages are copied from the 2007 section devoted to psychiatry. The home page is again organized by lecture, and each section gives a great deal of material devoted to that subject. Comparing the psychotic disorders section here, for example, not only is the student given the relevant lecture slides (and associated notes integrated into the slides--see an example of this) and syllabus readings, but new additions include patient videos. A particularly popular addition to the site was the introduction of "previews" which are short online automated lectures meant to prepare the student for the next series of lectures. (for an example of a short preview, watch my psychotic disorders preview, which can be viewed in a variety of formats including for windows, mac, and an ipod version.

Materials developed for the clerkship

    The Clerkship Website
Psychiatry was the first clerkship at Brown to make use of WebCT, a course development software now used widely in the preclinical classes. The actual website is on MyCourses, however this link demonstrates some of the material found at that site.

Materials developed for the Residency

    The Residency Website.
From 2001 on, I began work on the residency training web site. A number of residents have helped, however the current site on the web is largely my conception and design (note that Paul Malloy Ph.D. created the template and overall look of the DPHB web). The home page for the residency can be found here and the portion devoted to residents here. Note that if one follow the various links on the resident's web page, it will lead to a number of useful sites developed for the web, including the resident's online handbook, a collection of resident achievements, educational information, photos and CVs of current and past residents, and a number of online forms I developed to help keep track of vacation, coverage and call changes. In addition to resident materials, there is material for prospective applicants, bios of the program directors, a program description, and a large amount of other material.
    Online evaluations
Beginning about 2004, I developed an online evaluation system, using the commercial online product myevaluations.com. I chose this products because at the time, the university had not yet committed to an online product, and this system was very cost efficient and reliable, although it took a more setup time and basic programming than the more expensive systems purchased by Brown and Lifespan. My contribution to the product including converting all available evaluations into an online format, developing new ones, basic formatting and programming and setting up the system so that is could be used by residents and attendings. This is an online system that is password protected, however you can view an example of an online evaluation here and an example of a resident report (the document that records the attendings evaluations of the resident) here.
    Online Duty Hours collection
After setting up the evaluation system, I then developed a system for online recording of duty hours by the residents. Again, this is password protected, however this tutorial I created gives an idea of how the duty hours system works.
    Consultation-Liaison (C-L) Psychiatry Course
This is an example of background material I created for a series of lectures given in the PGY-1 and 2 year on C-L Psychiatry, which is part of the didactic series for those years. It was originally developed around 2003-4. It includes lecture notes and readings relating to the course. This was originally created for a CD, and then as a website, and an example can be viewed here.

Materials Developed for Various National Organizations

    For the American Psychiaric Association
Using your Pocket PC in Psychiatry (A course presented at several annual meetings)
For the Academy of Psychosomatic Medicine
"Pain" (Lecture and supporting material for the APM update course)
For the Association for Academic Psychiatry
Schizophrenia (videos were produced at Columbia University and given to me to digitize and organize for web teaching).

Miscellaneous Teaching Materials

    "The Physiology of Pain"
an animated movie (here in mpg--i.e., DVD--format - requires appropriate computer player) I created for the Academy of Psychosomatic Medicine's "Update in C-L" course, a CD of which has been widely distributed. I subsequently have used this in lectures and presentations on pain management for residents and students at Brown.
    "Antidepressants"
An interactive program I developed for medical students. (note, it was meant to be played from a CD, and is a little quirkly online - to play it you have to say "yes" when the security warning pops up, and you have to let the program download the appropriate player (which means you have to be online to play it).
    Psychopharmacology movies.
Over the years I have created various animated movies meant to demonstrate various psychopharmacological principles. For an example, here are visualizations of the actions of benzodiazepines on GABA, and the action of reuptake inhibitors at the level of the axon (both are in mpeg format, which means your computer has to be able to play DVDs in order to view them). Although these have mainly been used in the classroom setting and on the class web page, stills from these movies have been features in a major psychiatric textbook.
    Teaching with Technology (interactive poster)
To demonstrate principles of teaching with technology, I created this self running, interactive "poster" which I presented at a number of conferences.
And also presented this simple interactive flash animation as an example of simple computer interactivity for demonstrating psychopharmacology.
And here is an example of an online lecture I did to introduce students to depression. The goal of these lectures is to move much of the clerkship content to an online setting, so that face to face time can be spent using more interactive techniques.
