Cancer of the Lung & Bronchus

Lung Tumors Peter Berndt, copyright 1995, www.cmsp.com

Symptoms: Persistent cough, chest pain, recurring pneumonia or bronchitis, sputum streaked with blood.

Risk Factors: Cigarette smoking, exposure to certain industrial substances, e.g. arsenic, exposure to radon & asbestos, air pollution, tuberculosis and environmental tobacco smoke.

Detection & Treatment: Early detection is difficult since symptoms do not usually appear until the disease is advanced. Chest x-ray, analysis of cells contained in sputum and fiber-optic examination of bronchial passages assist diagnosis. 5-year relative survival rates for all stages combined is 14%. The survival rate is 50% for localized cases but only 15% of lung cancers are discovered that early.
