Prostrate Cancer
Symptoms: Inability to urinate, blood in the urine, increased frequency of urination, pain or burning urination, continuing pain in the lower back, pelvis or upper thighs.
Risk Factors: The probability of acquiring prostrate cancer increases with age. African-Americans are at the greatest risk of acquiring prostrate cancer worldwide.
Detection & Treatment: A digital rectal exam of the prostrate gland & prostrate-specific antigen blood test is recommended every year for men aged 50 and over. Treatment involves surgery and radiation. The 5 -year relative survival rate for patients whose tumors are diagnosed while still localized is 100%. The survival rate for all stages combined is 93%.
