Rabies viruse belongs to the Rhabdovirus family which is a negative
stranded RNA virus that can infect many kinds of mammals, such as dogs, cats, racoons,
cattle and humans. It is transmitted via the saliva of an infected animal. It targets the
central nervous system and is 100% fatal after onset of clinical symptoms. Post-exposure
treatment with antibodies and vaccination during a critical period is 100% effective in
preventing extensive neurological damage and death.
