African trypanosomiasis, also known as sleeping sickness, is caused by the parasite Trypanosoma brucei. It infects 250,000 to 300,000 people and approximately 55 million are at risk. 25,000 people are infected per year. American trypanosomiasis, also known as Chagas disease, is caused by the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi.. It infects 20 million people and approximately 30 million are at risk. 43,000 people will die this year from Chagas' disease.
