Abstract

This study investigated the immunization status of adolescents enrolled in RIte Care who attend pediatrics at Hasbro Hospital

The subject population consisted of adolescents from the age of  13   to  15  who are enrolled in RIte care and who have had appointments at Hasbro Hospital in the last sixth months.  These adolescents receive RIte Care as part of their parents federal and state welfare benefits.  The majority of them is from low income families and are especially at risk for many diseases.

Permission for undertaking the study was obtained from the Institutional Review Board after an expedited review process because the study only looked at existing records and removed all patient identifiers.  The dates of Hepatitis B, Measles-Mumps-Rubella, diptheria, Tetanus, and Varicella vaccinations will were obtained from a computerized immunization administration database.  Brown undergraduates reviewed all of the patient’Äôs charts to confirm the dates entered for vaccinations. The accuracy was checked and corrections entered into the computer database.  The results were analyzed by the computer database and transferred to an Excel file.  From these results, the different factors were compared to see the overall coverage of the vaccines, whether the vaccines were administered according to the proper schedule and to determine which populations are not or have not completed vaccination.  All patient identifiers were stripped by the data analysis phase, and all analysis of the data was done on site.
