The cases in this course are analyzed according to the SOAP system of problem oriented medical records:
S = subjective (patient's complaints)
O = objective (physician's physical exam, laboratory tests,
X-rays and other clinical studies)
A =
assessment (problem list and diagnoses)
P = plan (further diagnostic tests, pharmacotherapy, allergen avoidance, immunotherapy, diet, environmental controls, disposition of patient).
Intermediate and advanced students are expected to utilize a Uniform Medical Language System (UMLS). Subjective (S) and objective (O) data are presented to the student. The cases are analyzed in class in a problem-based learning (PBL) format in which the assessments (A) and plans (P) are added.
