Phyllodes tumor

Benign phyllodes tumor is characterized by the presence of leaf-like growth pattern and elongated epithelial-lined

clefts.  Stromal cellularity is most dense in areas adjacent to the epithelial components. Increased mitotic figures may

be present in this zone. In contrast to fibroadenomas, phyllodes tumors arise from the periductal rather than from

intralobular stroma. The differentiation of fibroadenoma from benign phyllodes tumor is based on estimation of the degree

of stromal cellularity, the presence of leaf-like processes and gross appearance. Phyllodes tumors represent a spectrum

including benign, low grade malignant (borderline), and high grade malignant tumors based on their stromal features.
