Details for Graduates

Application (after you got accepted by the selection committee)

1. Fill in the Antrag auf einen Studienplatz an der Humboldt-Universität im Rahmen eines Programmes

2. Collect all necessary documents: 

Nomination from home university (available from Prof. Simanowski at the German Department)

Language Certificate (not older than 6 month); if you need an updated certificate please contact Prof. Simanowski at the German Department

If needed application for place in dormitory (information and download of "Antrag auf bevorzugte Zuteilung eines Wohnheimplatzes")

If applicable registration for intensive German course: September 8 - October 6, 2006; 350 EURO, daily 5 hours, deadline: June 30 (information and download of "Anmeldeformular" / online placement test)

3. Submit all documents by June 30 to:

The contact person in the International Office for USA is Ursula Grawert (ursula.grawert@uv.hu-berlin.de). Once your documents have been received you will get a confirmation with information for your arrival in Berlin and registration at HU.


Insurance

You do not have to prove health insurance coverage at the registration at HU (details). Please consult with your American health insurance company and with the IPO at Brown.

If you are covered by Blue Cross with Brown, you are also covered in Germany in emergency cases. For non-emergency inpatient medical care contact the BlueCard Worldwide Service Center beforehand. Visa

As citizen of USA and various other countries you do not need a visa ( details)

Accommodation

  • Dormitory:
    Apartments in the dormitory are 140 up to 240 EURO: 1 room, kitchen, bathroom. Rooms are equipped with a table, chair, bed, stove, fridge. TV, linens, tableware, curtain are not provided. (linens and tableware is available for 60 EURO in the dormitory = "Einsteiger-Paket").
    You have to sign a lease of at least three months with the operator of the dormitory (Studentenwerk).
    Dormitories are located in different neighborhoods. The International Office does not determine which dormitory you are assigned. The Studentenwerk is responsible for this.

  • Sublease/apartment-sharing:
    You may want to look for an apartment or room to rent on your own (
    links). Humboldt Universität is located in Berlin Mitte. The culturally most interesting and vital neighborhoods with affordable rents are Kreuzberg, Prenzlauer Berg, Friedrichshain, Mitte.
    There are some hostels in Berlin (links
    here and here ). The "A & O Hostel + Hotel Mitte" (Köpenicker Str. 127-129, 10179 Berlin-Mitte, Tel. 030/809 47 0) is located nearby Humboldt University.

Money

  • The stipend from Humboldt University (510 EURO per month for the length of 5 or 10 month respectively) will be transferred monthly to your German bank account or paid in cash in the university.
