Introduction

Butler Hospital is one of the oldest psychiatric hospitals in the nation. It offers a humanitarian approach to the treatment of the mentally ill. Butler Hospital was designed with the patients in mind and the designers did not compromise the patient's welfare to cut the costs of construction. Butler Hospital is known today in Providence as a leader in the care of the mentally afflicted. It was named one of the best psychiatric hospitals in the U.S. by U.S. News and World Report in 2003. In addition, since the 1970s it has been affiliated with Brown University Medical School.
