Location

Butler Hospital is located on a 120-acre plot of land a few miles from the center of Providence along Seekonk River. It is adjacent to the Swan Point Cemetery in North Providence. The original plot was nicknamed "Grotto Farm" because of the ravine that ran through it. The Board of Trustees chose this plot of land because its beautiful landscape was secluded and resembled that of the prototypical European. The forests, meadow, dell, and pasture provide the patients with a space of therapeutic value and remove them from the center of industrial cities. T He landscape was originally maintained by H.W.S. Cleveland, and later by the Olmstead Brothers in 1906.
