This small area, part of Providence's North End,  was sparsely settled until the 19th Century, when a mill was built on Wanskuck Pond. Industrial growth began in the second half of the 19th Century with the establishment of a Bleaching and Dyeing Company, and working class housing surrounding it, mostly one and two family homes along Charles Street, Branch Avenue and Silver spring Street. Growth was further encouraged by the establishment of trolley lines in 1895 and 1908 respectively. After major industry left in the 1930s and 1950s, the area is today a primary residential and commercial area.
