Building

The Cranston St. Armory has been described as the Disney castle of Providence by its residents. This massive castle-like-building has a yellow brick and reddish granite façade. It is also adorned with corbelling, copper trim, and Romanesque details. The building consists of a central drill hall with two flanking matching 4-story office blocks each with a 6-story tower. The towers are reminiscent of feudal towers and of the military style of architecture in the early 19th century. The central hall has a hip roof with steel truss system and a 50 ft by 165 ft clerestory monitor. The drill shed has an interior of 235 ft by 170 ft and stands 90 feet tall. Entrances to the building are on Dexter and Parade Streets. The Armory is built on an 11 acre plot of land and has 165,000 square feet of usable space. The Armory lies next to the Dexter Training Ground which is now used as a park.
