Located in the northwestern part of the city Elmhurst was developed from farmland into a residential neighborhood in the late 19 th Century. William Grosvenor's Gothic Revival Villa called "Elmhurst" had begun this trend in 1849; In the early 20 th Century, Elmhurst had become a mainly middle and upper class residential neighborhood. To further development, the city constructed Pleasant Valley Parkway in 1908, Providence College was founded nearby in 1917, La Salle Academy moved nearby in 1925 and in 1926 Women and Infants Hospital and Roger Williams Hospital were founded.
